Our Character Word-of-the-Month for February…HONESTY!

This month students will be learning about honesty. The definition we are using at school is to be truthful in words and actions, teaching children to earn trust by being dependable and doing the right thing, even if it is difficult. Here are some things you can do at home to help them learn this very important character trait:

  • Talk with your child about what it means to be an honest and trustworthy person and why it is important. Make sure he/she knows that it is important to you.
  • Watch a television program together and talk about the various ways in which the characters acted honestly and dishonestly towards one another.
Remember, you are your child's most important teacher. He or she will learn a lot about being trustworthy from watching what you do.
  • Visit a public library and ask the librarian to help them locate stories or books with an honesty theme.
  • Students can interview family members of all ages to find out their beliefs about honesty.
  • Have a great month!

I service as the social worker at LaVerna Evans Elementary School in the morning and Hinchcliffe School in the afternoon. I provide individual, group, and crisis counseling and intervention as well as information and referral services to students and their families. I also work closely with the Special Education Department in developing and supporting interventions and goals for students eligible for special education services. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
