Soaring Toward Great Character

How our 2008-2009 program works:
At LaVerna Evans Elementary, we believe that our Character Education provides students with the encouragement and skills to become successful in school and the community.

This year's program "Soaring Toward Great Character" began with a school-wide kick-off assembly which took place on Wednesday, August 20, 2008. Students and staff were reminded of the School-Wide Expectations and Character Words used each year to help their “great character soar”.

Our Character Education program will be hosting a Mad Science assembly September 22, 2008. We feel that these assemblies contribute to our message. LaVerna Evans always welcomes new and different opportunities to teach our students lessons in applying our character words.

We will also sponsor a Family Fun Night scheduled for Friday, January 23, 2009. Family and friends of LaVerna Evans are invited to come out and support our Character Education program for a night of fun and games. All proceeds will be used to fund our program’s rewards and incentives for classroom teachers.

This year's program will run much the same as in years past. We focus on a word of the month, and we reward students with Evans Eagles coupons when they are demonstrating that month's trait or one previously introduced. Each week, the classroom teacher will draw out TWO winners from their collected coupons--a total of EIGHT winners for the month. At the end of each month, Mr. Keller and Mrs. Buck draw from the month's collection of coupons for a Treasure Chest drawing.

The Evans Eagle Character Pledge is followed by the Pledge of Allegiance every morning and focuses our students on making great choices each day.This year, Mrs. Buck will go to each classroom and give every student the chance to sign a banner with the Evans Pledge.The banner will be displayed in the office area for the 2008-2009 school year.

Also posted throughout the building are school-wide expectations to help students focus on making good choices in various areas during the school day.
